How the SIP calculator works
Understanding systematic investment planning and wealth creation through SIP.
- Set Investment AmountDecide on a fixed amount you can invest monthly. Start with what you can afford and increase gradually.
- Choose Time HorizonDetermine your investment period based on your financial goals. Longer periods generally yield better results due to compounding.
- Select Expected ReturnBased on historical data and fund performance, set realistic return expectations. Equity funds typically range from 10-15% annually.
- Calculate & InvestUse the calculator to see projections and start your SIP. Monitor periodically but avoid frequent changes.
SIP formula explained: FV = PMT × [((1 + r)^n − 1) / r] × (1 + r)
FV = Future Value (Maturity Amount) · PMT = Monthly SIP Amount · r = Monthly return rate (Annual rate ÷ 12) · n = Total number of months
SIP terms & definitions
Essential terminology for understanding systematic investment planning.
- SIP (Systematic Investment Plan)
- A disciplined approach to investing where you invest a fixed amount regularly in mutual funds. It helps in rupee cost averaging and building wealth over time through the power of compounding.
- Rupee Cost Averaging
- When you invest a fixed amount regularly, you buy more units when prices are low and fewer units when prices are high, averaging out the cost of your investments over time.
- Compounding
- The process where your investment returns generate their own returns. Over time, this creates a snowball effect that can significantly boost your wealth.
- NAV (Net Asset Value)
- The per-unit price of a mutual fund scheme. It's calculated by dividing the total value of all assets minus liabilities by the number of outstanding units.
- Expected Return
- The anticipated annual return from your investment based on historical performance and market conditions. It's used to project future value but actual returns may vary.
- Maturity Amount
- The total value of your SIP investment at the end of the investment period, including both your invested amount and the returns generated.
Important: SIP is subject to market risks. Past performance doesn't guarantee future returns. Always consult with a financial advisor.
Smart SIP investment strategies
Expert tips to maximize your SIP returns and build long-term wealth.
- Start Early: The power of compounding works best over longer periods. Starting early, even with small amounts, can lead to significant wealth creation.
- Stay Consistent: Don't stop your SIP during market downturns. Market volatility is normal, and consistency helps you benefit from rupee cost averaging.
- Increase SIP Amount: Increase your SIP amount annually by 10-15% or whenever your income grows. This helps beat inflation and accelerates wealth creation.
- Choose Right Funds: Select funds based on your risk tolerance, investment horizon, and financial goals. Diversify across different fund categories.
Additional investment tips
- Diversify across large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap funds
- Review your portfolio annually and rebalance if needed
- Use step-up SIP to increase investment amount annually
- Don't panic during market volatility - stay invested
- Consider tax-saving ELSS funds for Section 80C benefits
Frequently asked questions
How is SIP return calculated?
SIP returns use the Future Value of annuity formula: FV = P × [(1 + r)^n – 1] / r × (1 + r), where P = monthly investment, r = monthly rate of return (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100), n = number of months. The result gives the estimated corpus assuming a constant return rate.
How much SIP is needed to get ₹1 crore?
To accumulate ₹1 crore: at 12% annual return, invest ₹5,500/month for 20 years, or ₹10,000/month for 15 years, or ₹21,000/month for 10 years. Use our calculator to find the exact SIP amount for your timeline and target.
What is a realistic SIP return rate?
Historically, Indian equity mutual funds (large-cap) have given 12–14% CAGR over long periods. Mid-cap funds average 15–18%. Index funds (Nifty 50) have given around 12–13% over 10+ years. Debt/hybrid funds give 7–9%. Actual returns vary — use 10–12% for conservative projections.
What is Step-up SIP?
A Step-up SIP (or Top-up SIP) allows you to increase your monthly investment amount by a fixed percentage or amount each year. For example, starting with ₹5,000/month and increasing by 10% annually significantly boosts your final corpus compared to a flat SIP.
Can I withdraw SIP anytime?
For open-ended mutual funds, yes — you can redeem SIP units anytime. However, ELSS (tax-saving) SIP has a 3-year lock-in per installment. Some funds may have exit loads if redeemed before 1 year. Long-term (3+ years) equity SIP gains are taxed as LTCG at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh/year.
Is SIP better than FD or PPF?
SIP in equity mutual funds offers higher potential returns (12–15%) vs FD (6–7%) or PPF (7.1%), but comes with market risk. For goals 7+ years away, SIP is generally more powerful for wealth creation. For safety and guaranteed returns, PPF and FDs are better. Ideally, use a mix.
