What is GST (Goods and Services Tax)?

GST, or Goods and Services Tax, is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services across India. It was introduced on 1st July 2017, replacing a complex web of earlier taxes including VAT (Value Added Tax), Service Tax, Central Excise Duty, and several other levies.

GST follows the concept of “One Nation, One Tax” – a single unified tax structure that applies across all states in India. This simplifies taxation, reduces the cascading effect of multiple taxes, and promotes transparency in the system. For businesses, GST compliance is managed digitally through the GSTN portal. If you are starting a new business, Company Registration is one of the key steps before applying for GST.

Key Characteristics of GST

GST has fundamentally transformed India’s indirect tax landscape. Here are its defining features:

  • Single Indirect Tax System: GST has replaced over 17 different central and state taxes, creating one unified tax framework.
  • Uniform Tax Structure: The same GST rate applies to a product or service regardless of which state it is sold in, ensuring nationwide consistency.
  • Digital Compliance: Businesses must file GST returns online through the GSTN portal. Use our GSTR-3B Interest Calculator to estimate interest on delayed payments and stay compliant.
  • Destination-Based Tax: GST is collected at the point of consumption, meaning the tax revenue goes to the state where goods or services are consumed.
  • Input Tax Credit (ITC): Businesses can claim credit for GST paid on their purchases, reducing the overall tax burden and eliminating the cascading tax effect.

How GST Works (Example)

GST is levied at every stage of the supply chain, but Input Tax Credit (ITC) ensures that the tax is ultimately borne only by the end consumer. Here is a simplified example:

PartySale PriceGST @18%Tax Paid to Govt.
Manufacturer₹1,000₹180₹180
Wholesaler₹1,500₹270₹90 (270−180)
Retailer₹2,000₹360₹90 (360−270)

Each party pays GST only on the value they add. The total tax collected equals ₹360, which is 18% of the final price of ₹2,000 – borne entirely by the end consumer. You can verify such calculations instantly using our GST Calculator.

GST Slabs in India

The GST Council has categorised goods and services into five tax slabs:

GST RateExamples of Goods & Services
0%Fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs, bread, unbranded cereals, educational services, health services
5%Packaged food items, tea, coffee, coal, economy hotel rooms, transport services (railways, economy air travel)
12%Processed foods, fruit juices, business-class air tickets, medicines, mobile phones, butter, cheese
18%IT services, restaurant services, telecom, FMCG products, financial services, most manufactured goods
28%Luxury goods, automobiles, tobacco, aerated drinks, casinos, five-star hotel stays, cement

Alcohol for human consumption and petroleum products currently fall outside GST and are taxed separately by state governments. If you receive a late notice for annual filings, use our GSTR-9 Late Fee Calculator to estimate your dues.

Types of GST in India

GST is divided into different components depending on the nature of the transaction:

  • CGST (Central GST): Collected by the Central Government on intra-state transactions. For example, if you sell goods within Maharashtra, CGST applies.
  • SGST (State GST): Collected by the State Government on the same intra-state transaction alongside CGST, at an equal rate. On an 18% GST deal within a state, 9% is CGST and 9% is SGST.
  • IGST (Integrated GST): Levied by the Central Government on inter-state transactions and on imports. IGST replaces both CGST and SGST for such transactions.
  • UTGST (Union Territory GST): Applicable in Union Territories without a legislature, such as Chandigarh and Lakshadweep. It functions similarly to SGST.

GST Calculation Formula

Understanding the GST formula helps you verify calculations manually. There are two main methods:

GST Exclusive Calculation (Adding GST to Base Price)

Use this when the quoted price does not include GST and you need to find the final payable amount.

GST Amount = (Original Price × GST Rate) ÷ 100

Final Price = Original Price + GST Amount

Example: Software services worth ₹50,000 with 18% GST.

  • GST Amount = (50,000 × 18) ÷ 100 = ₹9,000
  • Final Price = ₹50,000 + ₹9,000 = ₹59,000

GST Inclusive Calculation (Reverse GST)

Use this when the quoted price already includes GST and you need to find the base price separately.

GST Amount = Price − [Price × {100 ÷ (100 + GST%)}]

Base Price = Price − GST Amount

Example: A product is priced at ₹59,000 inclusive of 18% GST.

  • Base Price = 59,000 × (100 ÷ 118) = ₹50,000
  • GST Amount = ₹59,000 − ₹50,000 = ₹9,000

Skip manual maths entirely – use our online GST Calculator for instant, error-free results.

Supporting GST Calculators

StartBusiness offers several specialised calculators to cover all your GST-related needs:

Reverse GST Calculator

The Reverse GST Calculator helps you determine the base price when only the GST-inclusive amount is known. Enter the total price, select the GST rate, and the tool instantly returns the original price before tax and the exact GST component. Available as part of our GST Calculator suite.

GST Percentage Calculator

The GST Percentage Calculator lets you find the applicable GST percentage when you know both the base price and the final price. This is useful for auditing invoices, comparing vendor quotes, or verifying whether the correct slab has been applied to a transaction.

GST Split Calculator (CGST + SGST)

For intra-state transactions, GST is split equally between CGST and SGST. Our GST Split Calculator shows the exact breakdown – for example, on an 18% GST invoice, 9% is CGST and 9% is SGST. This is essential for accurate GST return filing and ITC reconciliation.

GSTR-3B Interest Calculator

If you have missed or delayed a GST payment, our GSTR-3B Interest Calculator helps you estimate the interest liability at 18% per annum so you can plan your payment and avoid escalating dues.

GSTR-9 Late Fee Calculator

For businesses that have delayed filing their annual GST return, our GSTR-9 Late Fee Calculator gives you a quick estimate of the late fee applicable, including any amnesty scheme caps that may apply.

Who Should Register for GST?

GST registration is mandatory for businesses that exceed certain turnover thresholds or meet specific criteria:

  • Businesses supplying goods with an annual turnover exceeding ₹40 lakh (most states) must register for GST.
  • Service providers with an annual turnover exceeding ₹20 lakh must register.
  • Special category states (Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, North-Eastern states) have lower thresholds of ₹10 lakh for services.
  • Businesses making inter-state supplies of goods or services must register regardless of turnover.
  • E-commerce operators and sellers on platforms like Amazon or Flipkart must register for GST mandatorily, irrespective of turnover.
  • Casual taxable persons, non-resident taxable persons, and those required to pay tax under reverse charge also need to register.

If you are starting a new venture, explore Company Registration or Startup India Registration to formalise your business entity before applying for GST.

To plan your full tax obligations beyond GST, use our Income Tax Calculator to estimate your annual income tax liability alongside your GST compliance.
